The Dental Crown Treatment Process

If your tooth requires a dental crown, the New Horizons Institute dentists will first assess the area to see if you also require additional treatment before moving on to the crowns procedure. Once you are approved for treatment, your Arizona low income dentist can move on to adding the crown and securing it in place.

What does the process look like?

  • Taking a mold of the tooth

  • Filing down and removing the outer layer of the tooth

  • Taking an impression of the trimmed tooth and surrounding teeth

  • Applying a temporary crown to protect the filed tooth

  • Sending the impression to the lab, or applying the same-day crown

  • Cementing the crown on top of the field tooth

What Types of Dental Crowns Are There?

There are two different types of crowns used in dentistry, same-day and lab-made crowns. Both are strong, durable, and extremely reliable to restore the form and function of your smile.

Lab-made crowns

These are the type of crowns that require taking an impression of your filed tooth, which is then sent to a lab where the crown is custom made just for you. The process can take several days, and you will need to come into the office for a temporary fitting and adjustments to make sure the lab crown perfectly fits before it’s permanently cemented.

Same-day crowns

With a same-day crown, the procedure can all be done in just one appointment. The teeth are digitally scanned, and then a special machine created the crown based on your exact measurements while you wait. The crown is then permanently cemented on top of your tooth, in just one office visit.
